There was a lot of movement in Europe by Bahamian professional basketball players this summer. A few of them were in action for their teams in preseason, regular season and Cup play over the weekend.
Travis Munnings took his talents to Portugal over the summer when he signed with Uniao Desportiva (UD) Oliveirense Basquetebol. They are in their preseason and played two games over the weekend. In the first game, he was able to score 15 points, grab two rebounds and dish out five assists in a dominant 111-50 win for his team over Maia BC. In the second game, he led the way for his team with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Bahamian forward made a strong debut against AD Ovarense in the preseason with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. They won that game 84-76. In a rematch with AD Ovarense, he scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds. They won that game 77-71.
Munnings and his new team have a 4-1 win-loss record in preseason play.
UD Oliveirense plays in the top tier league in Portugal – Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol. They are the two-time defending league champions. Adding Munnings, they are looking to three-peat.
Playing in her second league game for Embutidos Pajariel Bembibre PDM, Lashann Higgs poured in eight points in a 70-45 loss to Lointek Gernika Bizkaia this past weekend. She plays in the Liga Femenina Endesa (Liga Dia) – the highest women’s basketball division in Spain.
Higgs was able to help her team cut into Lointek’s lead as Lointek led just 38-27 going into the half.
Bembibre PDM had a tough second half as they were outscored 32-18.
In their first game of the season on Saturday, September 19, Higgs and Bembibre lost to IDK Euskotren, 76-56. Higgs scored the second highest points on the team with 11 in that opener.
League action continues for the former University of Texas Longhorns guard and her squad tomorrow night when they play SPAR Canaria, looking to register their first win of the season.
Jaraun “Kino” Burrows was also in action over the weekend as he and the Fos Provence Basket Byers took down his old team Aix-Maurienne 90-56 in the Leaders Cup. In 24 minutes of play, the Bahamian scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists. Burrows shot 62.5 percent from the field, going 5-for-8.
They are unbeaten in the three games they have played in thus far. Burrows and Fos Provence will start their season on October 10 against Aix-Maurienne.
