Former Temple Christian School basketball players Deyton Albury and Garreth Edgecombe faced off against each other in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with Albury and his team winning 71-56 in a preseason battle last Sunday.
Albury finished with 12 points for his Believe Prep team in that game while Edgecombe finished with 10 points and 11 boards for his Franklin Prep team.
“It started off weird at first, seeing me and him in different jerseys on the court at the same time, but it’s basketball at the end of the day and we went at each other, but we (Believe Prep) came out with the win,” Albury said.
Believe Prep was down by as many as 15 points in the second half but they managed to come from behind for the double-digit victory. They capitalized on Franklin Prep’s turnovers.
Edgecombe said that it won’t be the last time they play against each other.
“It was great and a competitive game and during the game he (Albury) had plays where he would blow past and score on my teammates and it would be the same on the other side. Playing AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) this whole summer together, it was new for me that he would be on the opposing team, but the match-up was great, and it won’t be the last time we play against each other,” said Edgecombe.
Edgecombe played in three games over the weekend. In his first game he finished with just two points and 10 rebounds in a win. In the game against Albury and Believe Prep he scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds, and in the third game, he finished with 12 points and eight rebounds in an overtime loss to Bull City Prep. They finished the weekend with a 1-2 win-loss record.
For Albury and Believe Prep, they were a perfect 3-0 on the weekend with all of the wins being by double digits. In their first game against Moravian Prep, Albury scored 12 points. He also had 12 points against Edgecombe and Franklin Prep, and erupted for 28 points against Bull City in their third game.
This is Albury’s first year at Believe Prep. He said that his team’s chemistry is at 90 percent and they feel comfortable on both offense and defense. He expects them to do big things as the year progresses. Their workouts include running and conditioning.
At Franklin Prep, Edgecombe said they are still learning each other’s strengths on the court but they are quickly adjusting and improving as a team. He plans to help his team be one of the top teams in the country. Edgecombe said that their practices are very intense. They are doing conditioning, ball handling and shooting drills before getting into their play sets.
Having played AAU basketball this summer, the duo has gotten accustomed to playing during the pandemic. The measures and protocols have not been difficult for them to adjust to at school, they said. They said they are staying sanitized, wearing masks and limiting their outings.
Edgecombe said his coaching staff has them in a bubble-like environment and he has to take the COVID-19 test every month.
Albury and Believe Prep will head down to Orlando, Florida, this weekend to play. Edgecombe returns to action tomorrow through the weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.
