Thirty-six new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in The Bahamas yesterday, pushing the total number of cases to 715, health officials reported.
Of the new cases, 20 were recorded on New Providence, 11 on Grand Bahama, three on Bimini and two on the Berry Islands.
In total, there are 608 active cases of the virus in The Bahamas.
Officials did not provide further details of the cases.
Twenty-two people remain hospitalized.
Recovered cases remain at 91.
As of last night, 4,622 tests were completed, according to health officials.
The Bahamas recorded only 104 cases of the virus before July 1, the day the country reopened its borders.
Following that, there have been 611 cases, with the majority stemming from Grand Bahama, which has over 300 cases.
Following the dramatic rise in cases, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis implemented a two-week lockdown across The Bahamas to curb the spread of the virus.
“The longer we take collectively to bring this second wave under control, the longer it will take to resume a sense of normalcy,” Minnis said.
He also announced essential services such as food stores, water depots, pharmacies and gas stations will be permitted to operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
