At least 30 immigration officers COVID-19 positive, minister says

Elsworth Johnson.

At least 30 immigration workers tested positive for COVID-19, Minister of Immigration Elsworth Johnson revealed yesterday.

“We have immigration officers who have tested positive and who are now quarantined,” Johnson said.

“And we know that COVID-19, I’ve experienced it, I’ve lost a sister. You’re talking about someone being dead. That’s the ultimate cost that we are having to pay in this when people are irresponsible.

“And so, I want persons to take this very seriously.”

When asked how many workers tested positive, Johnson said: “No less than 30.”

Johnson, whose sister, Kim Johnson-Rolle, was the first recorded death from COVID-19 in The Bahamas, pleaded with Bahamians to take the virus seriously.

“Listen, let me say this to you,” he said.

“You have frontline workers, you have police officers, nurses, this thing is dangerous.

“I’m not going to speak to the figures, but to the extent that you have to come out and put on these masks and be about, your life is at risk; this is not a joke.

“And why I’m so impassioned, I was shell-shocked when the strongest of my father’s children went down; this is no game.

“So, we must listen to the medical experts who are themselves trying their best in these difficult times.”

Johnson’s comments came only a day after Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced a nationwide two-week lockdown to stop the spread of the virus as the country copes with a second wave of infections.
