A man found walking the streets during the curfew told officers that he was looking for “poom poom”.
Police arrested Cadwell Taylor, 37, around 10:55 p.m. on July 20 without a face mask.
When they asked Taylor why he was outside the confines of his home, Taylor said that he was “looking for poom poom”.
The officers also found a black handled cutlass strapped to Taylor’s left leg.
Taylor pleaded guilty to breaking the curfew, failing to wear a mask and unlawfully carrying arms at his arraignment yesterday.
He did not dispute the reason he gave the officers for being outside. But added that his female friend had put him out, so he was walking home.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes ordered Taylor to pay fines totaling $600 to avoid spending one month in prison.
Taylor did not have all the money. However, his sister-in-law paid half of the penalty to secure his release.
Forbes also granted an absolute discharge to a previous mental patient whom police arrested for breaking the curfew.
Officers arrested 24-year-old Alens Joachim, of Windsor Lane, after they found him walking on Wulff Road at 11:45 p.m. on August 25.
Joachim’s elder sister told the court that her brother suffered from a mental illness, but had stopped taking his medication. She produced his “pink card” from Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre (SRC) as proof.
But Joachim claimed he didn’t know his sister and said, “Someone sent her here to say that.”
Then, he rambled for several minutes.
Forbes said that SRC wasn’t taking any new admissions but it was apparent that Joachim needed help.
He released Joachim into the custody of his sister and dismissed the case.
Forbes dismissed curfew cases against people caught outside their homes. Some of the reasons given were seeking fresh air, looking for food and rum.
