The Supreme Court will resume all bail hearings starting today, Chief Justice Brian Moree, QC, announced on Thursday.
The move comes as the courts continue to expand operations during the coronavirus pandemic.
The court curtailed hearings and limited bail applications to emergencies as of March 20.
A notice posted on the judiciary’s website said the hearings would occur either by video-link from the prison, or in court, depending on the decision of the presiding judge.
Earlier this month, Moree announced the expansion of court operations on the criminal side of the Supreme Court.
Although new trials remain on hold, the Supreme Court has recommenced arraignments, pretrial reviews and case managements conferences.
Some of those hearings are held remotely using the Zoom videoconferencing platform.
Meanwhile, in the Magistrates’ Court, new and part-heard trials are suspended.
Magistrates continue arraignments and grant bail for offenses for which they have the jurisdiction.
Only 10 people are allowed inside the courtroom at any time, including defendants and judicial staff.
Traffic court is also suspended. However, people who don’t wish to contest their ticket, can pay their fines at the Magistrates’ Court Complex.
Additional information regarding the status of cases can be found on the judiciary’s website https://ift.tt/2QCP3Wr.
