Baha Mar will remain closed until October, the hotel’s President Graeme Davis announced in a letter to resort employees.
The mega resort, which employs several thousand Bahamians, will also execute additional staff cuts at the end of the month, Davis said.
However, he committed to assisting staff for an additional 90 days.
“Due to the many variables resulting from the evolving nature of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our reopening date beyond the July 1st reopening of The Bahamas,” Davis said.
“Instead, it is our goal to reopen in October.
“It is our hope that in extending our closing, we are setting the stage for a more successful reopening, one that will provide the much-needed economic relief and stability that all of us depend on.”
Melia Nassau Beach General Manager Daniel Lozano said that resort will also remain closed until October. In a letter to employees he said the resort will also be “making additional staffing reductions to align staffing levels with projected business volume upon reopening”.
In his letter, Davis said: “I understand that this is disappointing news after weeks of uncertainty. I personally feel a tremendous sense of disappointment as well. It remains our goal to have as many of you return to work as possible when we reopen.
“The toughest decisions are those that impact you, the members of our Baha Mar family, and the decision to delay our reopening is the most difficult one in our young history together.
“In March, we committed to support you as best we can for up to 90 days. As we near the end of this 90-day period, we will be making additional staffing reductions to align staffing levels with projected business volume upon reopening. At the end of June, we will communicate to the individuals being impacted by the staffing reduction to discuss what we will do to support and assist you in making your transition as smooth as possible. We look forward to bringing as many of you back as possible, once our business returns to pre-COVID-19 levels.”
Baha Mar has committed to provide up to an additional 90 days at 30 percent of staff’s base compensation as an ex gratia payment, in addition to what they collect from the National Insurance Board.
“Additionally, we will continue to cover eligible benefits, insurance premiums necessary to maintain your health insurance, life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage.”
Baha Mar closed its doors in late March. At the time the resort temporarily laid off all nonessential staff.
