After remaining open for the majority of the government mandated COVID-19 lockdown period, The Island House announced last week it would be closing its doors for the remainder of the month of August.
The 30-room boutique hotel, which also houses two restaurants – Shima and Mahogany House – as well as a coffee bar and liquor and wine cellar, employed approximately 150 people.
It is the most recent hotel property in the past month to close its doors following new travel restrictions and a second surge in COVID-19 cases.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have made the tough decision to close The Island House for the remainder of August beginning August 10. With the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and the resulting restrictions on travel, dining and curfew, we have decided to step back and let the country heal,” the Island House said in a statement posted to its social media accounts on Friday.
“We encourage everyone to stay home and respect the orders in the hope that from September The Island House will be able to slowly reintroduce the experiences and offerings you have grown to love and expect. Wishing you and your loved ones the very best as we navigate these uncertain times and we can’t wait to reopen our doors very soon.”
The Bahamas has 898 confirmed cases of COVID-19, more than 750 of which were reported since the country’s borders reopened to international commercial airlines on July 1.
Following the spike in cases, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis initially closed the borders to commercial flights from the United States, the world’s epicenter for COVID-19 cases, only to change the policy days later implementing a mandatory 14-day quarantine for any visitor, resident or citizen of The Bahamas entering the country.
Last week the prime minister announced a nationwide lockdown, only allowing grocery stores, pharmacies, water depots and gas stations to open for limited times.
