Bahamas has third highest number of cases among CARICOM countries

The Bahamas has the third highest number of COVID-19 cases, active cases and deaths among CARICOM countries.

The data was gleaned from CARICOM’s COVID-19 dashboard and the August 25 dashboards of each respective CARICOM country.

Haiti topped the list with 8,122 cases, followed by Suriname with 3,698. The Bahamas had 1,813 cases; Jamaica, 1,732 cases; Trinidad and Tobago, 1,384 cases; Guyana, 1,060 cases; and Belize, 730 cases.

The Turks and Caicos Islands had 431 cases; the Cayman Islands, 205; Bermuda, 168; Barbados, 164; Antigua and Barbuda, 94; St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 58; St. Lucia, 26; the British Virgin Islands, 26; Grenada, 24; Dominica, 20; St. Kitts and Nevis, 17; Montserrat, 13; and Anguilla, three.

As for active cases, Haiti topped the list with 2,248, followed by Trinidad and Tobago with 1,177. The Bahamas had 1,125 active cases; Jamaica, 801 cases; Belize, 672 cases; Guyana, 506 cases; and Turks and Caicos, 326 cases.

It was unclear how many active cases Suriname has.

The remaining 12 countries each had fewer than 25 active cases. Four of those countries – Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat and Anguilla – had no active cases and were COVID-19-free.

Haiti again topped the list in deaths, with 197. Suriname had 61 deaths; The Bahamas, 48, though health officials have said that the figure also includes deaths that are under investigation.

Guyana had 31 deaths; Jamaica, 19; Trinidad and Tobago, 15; Belize, 10; Bermuda, nine; Barbados, seven; Antigua and Barbuda, three; and Turks and Caicos, two.

Montserrat, the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands each recorded one death.

Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis and Grenada had no deaths.

In Haiti, 5,677 people recovered from the virus. In Suriname, 2,818; Jamaica, 840; The Bahamas, 634; Guyana, 523; the Cayman Islands, 202; Trinidad and Tobago, 192; Bermuda, 151; Barbados, 132; and Turks and Caicos, 102. The remaining countries have fewer than 50 recoveries each. 

There are over 19,700 cases among the 20 CARICOM countries; over 400 deaths; over 7,600 active cases; and over 11,500 recoveries.

The Bahamas is preparing to slowly reopen the domestic economy after an explosion of new cases emerged in the second wave. 

The country remains under a state of emergency with night-time curfews and mandated social distancing rules.

There also remain restrictions on domestic and international travel within the country.
