‘Jazz’ hits his 10th home run

A 30-30 season might be a little out of reach, but a 20-20 campaign is still within grasp for Bahamian professional baseball player with the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB) Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm.

The 23-year-old infielder hit his 10th home run of the season yesterday, a towering upper-deck shot to right center field off one of the heroes of the 2020 World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Julio Urías.

Chisholm turned on the first ball in the strike zone from Urías, a 92.2 miles per hour (mph) four-seam fastball, and deposited it to the upper-deck seats at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida – 446 feet away. That home run was the only run of the game for the Marlins, as they fell, 6-1, but they took the four-game series three games to one. The Marlins have sunk to the bottom of the National League East Division with a 38-48 win/loss record – eight and a half games behind the front running New York Mets.

For the season, which is just over its midway point, Chisholm is now batting .254 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs (runs batted in) – most of his damage coming from the leadoff position. He also has 34 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

In the four-game set against the World Series Champions Dodgers, Chisholm hit safely in each game and now has a four-game hitting streak. He was 1-for-4 with that solo home run and three strikeouts yesterday, and finished 5-for-17 in the series. He has an on-base percentage of .316, a slugging percentage of .438 and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .753.

The Marlins have won four out of seven against the Dodgers this season, but their struggles continues against other clubs. The Dodgers is one out of just four teams they have a winning record against this season.

After’s Chisholm’s solo shot yesterday, Urías settled down. He allowed just four hard-hit balls and struck out nine in seven strong innings. Urías got through six innings at 95 pitches, which was just one shy of his season-high, but with the bottom of the order due up in the bottom of the seventh, he was brought out for one more inning and the left-hander was able to retire the side on just six pitches.

Sandy Alcantara gave up seven hits and five runs in four innings and suffered the loss for the Marlins. The game was played in front of about 12,000 fans in Miami.

Defensively, Chisholm started at second base yesterday and committed his 13th error of the season – a fielding error in the top of the fifth that proved costly as two runners scored. He had four assists on the afternoon, and now has 163 assists, 78 putouts and 13 errors on the season. He has a .959 fielding percentage at second base and a .928 fielding percentage at shortstop. He has been a part of 43 double plays.

In the latest rookie rankings, as listed by Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com, Chisholm is at number four in the National League, trailing his teammate left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers, right-handed pitcher Ian Anderson of the Atlanta Braves and outfielder Dylan Carlson of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Chisholm remains one of the most electric young talents in the majors, and the further he gets from a hamstring problem he suffered earlier in the season, the more dynamic he is expected to be as the season progresses.

Chisholm and the Marlins remain home for their three-game series against the Atlanta Braves this weekend, and then they’ll break for the league’s 91st all-star classic at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, on Tuesday. Following that, they will return to action in a four-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, next weekend.
