The Briland Marina, a part of the Briland Club project on Harbour Island, officially opened on Friday with the developers, 4M Harbour Island Limited, investing $70.5 million so far in the project.
During the official opening ceremony, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said the developers intend to spend $100 million on the first phase of the project, which includes the basic marina structure, floating docks, the hardscape and landscape of the marina, four residential units, underground utilities and a power plant.
The developers are pushing to open the resort and commence phase two of the project before the end of the year, the prime minister noted.
“I am pleased that the contractors for this project are Bahamians, with an overwhelmingly Bahamian team. I am advised that there was a minimum of 108 individuals working on the project on a daily basis, with a maximum of 170 people on some days. During construction, Bahamian vendors, including hotel, housing and food vendors, are benefiting from the number of construction workers on the marina,” he said.
“The resort has not yet opened, but is planning to be fully functional for the next season starting later this year in November. I was informed that the developers intend to commence construction of phase two in the fourth quarter of 2021, which will include restoration of the Haunted House, crew’s quarters and residential units. The full completion of the Briland Club is scheduled for January 2023.”
The government signed a heads of agreement with principal of 4M Harbour Island Limited Michael Wiener in November 2018, for approval to purchase approximately 21 acres of land at Dunmore Town for the expansion of the initial project to include restaurants, a spa, 67 cottages, villas and suites and 16 condos.
Since then, the developers have been embroiled in legal battles as opponents who have voiced concern about the size of the project and its impact on the environment, sought to stop the development through the courts.
Minnis said the opening of the marina is representative of the revival of the Bahamian economy and tourism sector, and that the Briland Club contributes to a new era for Bahamian tourism.
“I congratulate 4M, the company and the family, on a dream still unfolding that will greatly benefit this community and that will host visitors from around the world. I know this has been a hard-fought and arduous journey. This is the nature of great dreams and compelling ideas. Adversity breeds character and determination,” he said.
