Briland Club upland works slated for fourth quarter start

Construction on phase two of the Briland Club is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will include expansion of the resort’s cottages and the building out of its food and beverage and upland amenities, the project’s developer Michael Wiener revealed.

Phase two of the development will include the restoration of the property and Harbour Island’s iconic “Haunted House”, crew’s quarters and residential units.

The development opened its once legally embattled marina on Friday. A Harbour Island group calling themselves BIRD (Br-Island Responsible Development Ltd.) vehemently opposed the development of the marina project and slowed its development through several court injunctions.

The opening of the $100 million marina has now led to preparation for the upland works slated to start before the end of the year.

Wiener said on Friday that the project has employed only Bahamian contractors.

“In fact, as of June 30th, there were 155 Bahamians working on the site,” said Wiener.

“We also encouraged, contractually, contractors to hire and train Brilanders whenever practicable. In addition, we will continue to make meaningful contributions to the island.”

The 27-acre community will include a beach club with pink sand beaches, a village featuring a clubhouse with restaurant and bar, a lighthouse, a retail and clothing boutique and 93 residences including cottages and custom private estates.

The community will also feature independent power generation, an independent clean water supply system and private wastewater treatment facilities so as to not burden the already stretched utilities on Harbour Island.

Wiener said the project grew out if his and his family’s love for the island.

“We visited Briland years before we invested in your beautiful jewel,” he said.

“While spending time here, we dreamed about creating a world-class marina and space that would raise the bar, so to speak, while maintaining and respecting the culture and natural charm of the island.”

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said the Briland Club marina is “one of the most beautiful marinas in the Caribbean”, during its opening on Friday.

“I am pleased that this major project garnered the strong support of the majority of Harbour Islanders, who were widely consulted,” said Minnis.

“It is the dream of many Bahamians on Harbour Island and Eleuthera, who wanted to see this project come to fruition.”
