Two men from New Providence are latest to die from COVID-19

A 46-year-old man and a 65-year-old man are the latest victims of COVID-19, health officials said yesterday.

Both men were from New Providence. This pushes the number of deaths in The Bahamas because of COVID-19 to 22.

There was also an additional non-COVID-related death, bringing the total to four.

There were 107 new cases of the virus reported yesterday.

Officials also said Tuesday’s COVID-19 dashboard incorrectly listed the number of hospitalizations as 78.

“The number of persons actually hospitalized tallied at forty-seven (47),” a statement from the Ministry of Health read.

“This discrepancy represented a misclassification of persons at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre (SRC).

“This institution is generally not designated as an acute care hospital or facility, rather a long-term care facility. The first positive COVID-19 person was identified at SRC on 25th July, 2020.

“Contact tracing and further testing activities have identified additional cases at this institution. Of the positive cases, twenty (20) persons are having symptoms and counted as clinical inpatients or hospitalized and are in isolation.

“These patients, although institutionalized, did not have to be hospitalized to receive a higher level of care. With this in mind, the dashboard has been adjusted to reflect the total number of hospitalizations, inclusive of today’s tally, which is now being reported as 61.”

In recent weeks, health officials have raised concern over diminishing bed capacity for COVID-19 patients. Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis recently said that the Public Hospitals Authority was seeking to add 80 beds to its complement, in part by using SuperClubs Breezes to treat non-COVID-19 patients and relocating 33 boarders from Princess Margaret Hospital.

New cases

Officials also said yesterday that there are now 1,531 cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Of the 107 new cases, there were 59 on New Providence, 44 on Grand Bahama, one on Exuma and the locations of three cases were listed as pending.

Health officials did not provide the age or sex of any of the new cases.

New Providence continues to lead the country with 880 cases, followed by Grand Bahama with 507 cases.

Bimini has 45 cases; Abaco, 44; the Berry Islands, 14; Exuma, six; Cat Island, eight; Eleuthera, four; Inagua, two; Andros, one; and the location of 20 cases is listed as pending.

According to the Ministry of Health COVID-19 Dashboard, six more people recovered, bringing the total to 209.

There are 1,296 active cases.

As of last night, 8,320 tests were completed, according to health officials. These include tests conducted by private facilities.
