For a little country, The Bahamas continues to excel in sports. The country has two prospects on Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Top 100 Prospects List, according to the list posted on MLB’s website on Wednesday afternoon.
The two Bahamians on the list are Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Kristian Robinson and Miami Marlins shortstop Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm.
Robinson comes in right under number 50 on the list at number 47. Chisholm comes in at number 72 on the list.
It’s a huge accomplishment for The Bahamas with Robinson and Chisholm both on the list. The United States of America has the most prospects on the list with 77. The Dominican Republic is second with 13 prospects. Venezuela has four prospects on the list, and The Bahamas sits there in fourth with two prospects. The Bahamas is one of four countries with multiple prospects. Filling out the fifth spot with one prospect each are Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Canada.
For 19-year-old Robinson, he continues to improve. He was added to the D’backs’ 60-man player pool yesterday and has been assigned to their alternative training site at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona. This comes after he was surprisingly left off the list back in July.
The 6’3”, 190-pound power hitter is now one step closer to being called up to the majors. Chisholm, who was signed by the D’backs in 2015, was on the Marlins’ 40-man roster when MLB got their season underway in late July. Chisholm is the number four prospect for the Marlins while Robinson is the number one prospect for the D’backs.
Robinson, who came through the Junior Baseball League of Nassau (JBLN), earned mid-season All-Star honors in the Class A Short Season Northwest League last year before advancing to the Class A Midwest League, where he was more than three years younger than the circuit’s average player.
Last season the towering player hit .282 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs (runs batted in) between two teams in the minor league system. He has shown that he can hit for power and average. Robinson also had a .514 slugging percentage (SLG) a year ago. His average fell off a bit when he was promoted to the Single-A level as he averaged .217, but he managed to hit five home runs in 25 games for the Kane County Cougars.
Although he is regarded as a power hitter, like most Bahamian athletes, he also has speed. Robinson stole a career-high 17 bases last season.
With the Minor League Baseball (MiLB) seasons canceled, Robinson’s addition to the 60-man squad gives him some hope that he will be able to get some swings in this year.
Chisholm had some action earlier in the year when he was a part of the Marlins Spring Training team. It was the second year in a row that he took part in Spring Training. In 11 games this year he had a batting average of .250 and finished with one home run. He had a .500 SLG.
Last season Chisholm played for two teams at the Double-A level. He finished with a batting average of .220 with 21 home runs, four short of the previous year. He had 54 RBIs and a .441 SLG.
The lefty, who came up through Freedom Farm Baseball League, is waiting for his name to be called to play in the majors.
Another Bahamian close to being called up to MLB is Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Lucius Fox Jr. who was added to his team’s 60-man roster earlier this year.
With both Robinson and Chisholm on the prestigious top 100 list, it shows that The Bahamas is headed in the right direction in baseball.
