Great Commission Ministries (GCM) President Bishop Walter Hanchell said he asked Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis to reopen to The Bahamas so vulnerable individuals can get access to necessities.
Hanchell’s comments came one day after Minnis announced a drastic seven day lockdown for New Providence — the most populous island in The Bahamas — amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Food stores, gas stations and water depots are not permitted to open during this time.
“I just sent an email to the prime minister asking him to please open the country so people could get food, water, medicine, pampers etc.,” Hanchell said in a statement on Tuesday.
“People have been calling from early this morning for food. One father was giving his children sugar and water and many people are stuck in their homes with no food because they had no warning before the lockdown and was totally unprepared.
“Some people hustle food on a daily basis. Others shop daily for theirs.”
He said The Bahamas is in “crisis”.
“We must act,” Hanchell said.
“We’re about to deliver food and meals. People are calling crying and feel oppressed. The lockdown came with no warning and notice and thousands were caught unprepared.
“This crisis has the potential to do be more disastrous than COVID-19. Please be in prayer. God will deliver our people.”
The lockdown is expected to end on August 25.
Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said health officials will assess its impact and determine whether an extension is necessary.
There are 731 cases of COVID-19 on New Providence.
