Not pushed in an unconventional event on Saturday, Bahamian phenom Steven Gardiner turned in a respectable performance, winning his heat of the men’s 100 meters (m) in 11.19 seconds.
The Bahamian speedster, who had previously stated that he intended to shut down his season, stepped on the track again, but this time in the shorter 100m sprint as opposed to other events that he ran this season. He was one of two Bahamian athletes competing at the American Track League Meet #6 on the campus of Life University in Marietta, Georgia.
Fellow superstar athlete Shaunae Miller-Uibo also competed, but instead of winning on the track, she took part in the women’s shot put – an event she last competed in at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) National Championships two years ago.
As for Gardiner, he won comfortably over youngster Gabriel Rolle, but was 10th overall. Alonso Edward, of Panama, took the overall title in 10.37 seconds. American Jaylen Bacon finished second overall in 10.50 seconds, and fellow American Kendal Williams was third overall in 10.53 seconds. Rolle was second in Gardiner’s heat in 11.41 seconds.
The Bahamian World Champion was significantly off his personal best time of 10.71 seconds but is showing an ability to be competitive in all of the sprints. He said he is looking forward to maintaining fitness for next year and representing The Bahamas well at the Olympic Games which is set for July 23 to August 8, 2021, in Tokyo, Japan.
Miller-Uibo competed in a pair of shot put events – the first in Marietta, Georgia, on Saturday, and the other in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday.
At that same American Track League Meet #6 on Saturday, she had a personal best toss of 11.70m (38’ 4-3/4”) to finish second in that competition. Jamaican world silver medalist Danniel Thomas-Dodd had a massive throw of 19.18m (62’ 11”), the fourth-best throw in the world this year, to win the title.
Miller-Uibo’s world-class decathlete husband Maicel Uibo competed in a couple of events at that same meet, finishing third overall in the long jump with a best leap of 7.06m (23’ 2”) and fifth overall in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.20m (17’ 0-3/4”).
On Sunday, the husband and wife team traveled down to Jacksonville to take part in the JAC Summer Closer at the Bolles School.
In the women’s shot put, Miller-Uibo had a best throw of 11.30m (37’ 1”) to come on top of that event. Youngsters Sidney Allen and Libby Williams finished second and third with distances of 10.05m (32’ 11-3/4”) and 8.26m (27’ 1-1/4”) respectively. Miller-Uibo was also listed for the high jump and javelin events but opted not to compete in those events.
In the men’s shot put event, her husband turned in a best throw of 14.09m (46’ 2-3/4”). He competed in the discus as well and had a best toss of 44.88m (147’ 3”) in that event. Uibo was also listed for the high and long jump events but opted not to compete in those events.
