Eye of Isaias to pass over Andros

While the center of Hurricane Isaias will pass directly over Andros this morning, Senior Deputy Director in the Department of Meteorologist Jeffrey Simmons warned that New Providence will also experience a lot of the storm’s violence.

“Because of the [storm’s] structure, here in New Providence may feel more severe conditions because we are in eastern portion of the storm, which is the more violent portion of the storm,” Simmons told The Nassau Guardian just after 8 a.m.

However, he added that Andros will experience stronger hurricane force winds.

“We are now getting the worst part of it right now,” Simmons said. “Right now conditions are going to deteriorate around here until about 11 a.m.”

He said by 5 p.m., New Providence should be out of the danger zone.

“On the forecast track, the center of Isaias will move on land Andros in the vicinity of Fresh Creek at about 10am, and exit the island just south of Red Bays at about 2pm today,” Simmons said in an earlier update.

”Residents in North Andros along this path will experience a brief calm and are advised not to venture outdoors during this period.

“Residents in Andros, the Berry Islands and New Providence will experience strong tropical storm to hurricane force conditions this morning, subsiding this afternoon.

“Residents in West Grand Bahama will begin to experience strong tropical force winds this afternoon that will continue through tonight. Localized flooding is expected as Isaias is forecast to produce rainfall amounts of four to eight inches.”

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected through Sunday, and Isaias is forecast to remain a hurricane during this time.

Simmons advised residents to remain indoors while experiencing hurricane and tropical storm force winds.

“Tornadic activities are possible in severe thunderstorms,” he said.
