The handover ceremony for the new commissioner of police has been postponed, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said yesterday.
“We’re supposed to have an official handing over for our new commissioner of police,” Minnis said during a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister.
“That has been postponed. The handing over will occur, but it will be a small, ceremonial event but the event that we are accustomed to, that will not occur.
“There was also scheduled an official police ball that you would have for the commissioner of police. That too has been postponed.
“However, once this matter (COVID-19 pandemic) has resolved, then we will have our official ceremony as we are accustomed to and we will have our official ball for the commissioner of police.”
This is the first time that the prime minister has addressed rumors that a new commissioner of police will assume office.
The Nassau Guardian understands that Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson will officially demit office before the end of the month.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle is reportedly tapped to become the next commissioner of police.
Rolle, who is in charge of discipline, joined the Royal Bahamas Police Force in 1983, 37 years ago.
