Under normal circumstances, Miss Bahamas World is chosen after a nationwide search and pageant competition. However, Sienna Evans has been selected to compete at the 70th Miss World Pageant in December in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Miss Bahamas Organization official Michelle Malcolm said the decision to select a representative this year was due to financial constraints of holding a pageant at this time, and health concerns due to COVID-19.
“We acknowledge that this year’s selection process was not typical, however, unusual times call for unusual measures. This was the best possible scenario, given the state we still find ourselves in as a country and the importance of continuity and a return to normalcy, even in pageantry,” said Malcolm in a press release. “That being said, we are confident that Sienna will do very well at this year’s Miss World pageant, and we are certainly giving her the support that she needs to do so.”
All the same, Evans said she was beyond thrilled.
“This has been a dream of mine for a very long time, and to realize that it has finally become a reality was sheer joy. I don’t take this for granted at all. This is truly an honor and a privilege, and you can be assured that I am going to give it my all to make the people of The Bahamas proud,” said Evans.
According to Malcolm, Evans shed tears when she was selected to carry the title.
Evans first competed for the Miss Bahamas title, at age 17. She fell just short of capturing the crown, placing first runner up.
Malcolm says Evans, 24, is more accomplished, educated, and as the new Miss Bahamas World, ready for the Miss World pageant.
Evans holds a bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience and human behavior. She serves on the board of the National Brain Injury Foundation in The Bahamas. She is also the owner of Access Bahamas Medical Labs, a network of bio-medical laboratories offering clinic services, concierge service for COVID tests by appointment, and drive through antigen tests.
Malcolm said it is through Evans’s labs that she will facilitate her Beauty with a Purpose project – a critical component of the Miss World pageant in which contestants are required to work on a project that helps the people in their home countries, allowing them to use their abilities to make a real and lasting contribution to the lives of the sick and disadvantaged. Evans’s project Access Granted will center around providing accessible healthcare to all Bahamians.
Malcolm said the new Miss Bahamas World is not just a beauty with brains, but also athletic, which makes her a great contender for the Miss World stage. Miss World places emphasis on the fitness of its delegates which is highlighted in the pageant’s Sportswoman competition. As an avid tennis player, collegiate softball player, mountain trekker, skier, swimmer, and equestrian, she is more than ready to meet the task.
Having already competed in the Miss Bahamas Organization system, Malcolm said Evans was among the best possible candidates given her experience in local pageantry and overall readiness. She said Evans’s preparations are in full gear and is being tutored by one of the world’s leading pageant coaches. Malcolm said Evans’ musical skills are being honed for an unforgettable performance in the talent competition.
The Miss World competition begins November 21. The finale will be held on December 16 at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum. Evans will be officially crowned prior to her departure by current queen Nyah Bandelier on a date to be announced.
