Former Bamboo Town MP Renward Wells said on Saturday that he is “considering” whether to run for a leadership position in the Free National Movement (FNM) when the party holds its full convention next February.
“I must be honest with you, there are scores of Free National Movement supporters who are asking me for quite some time to put my name forward in various positions in the party,” Wells said when asked if he was considering a run.
“I’m going to pray about it, sit down with my family, sit down with those folks inside in the constituency who supported me, those who support me inside the Free National Movement, and then I will make that decision as to what I will do inside of February.
“But I’m also going to speak to the former leader as well and based on the metrics, I’ll be able to say what I’ll do inside of February.”
His comments came during the party’s convention for leader over the weekend.
Wells reiterated that he is a member of the FNM.
He said he will continue to support the party.
“I will continue to be a part of the decision-making and leadership of the party of the Free National Movement,” he said.
Wells entered politics through the now-defunct National Democratic Party.
He was elected as a Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) MP in 2012 but cut ties with the party after he became entangled in a controversy involving the signing of a letter of intent for a waste-to-energy project at the New Providence landfill.
Wells joined the FNM in 2015 and won the Bamboo Town seat again in 2017.
After that election, he was appointed to then Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis’ Cabinet as minister of agriculture and marine resources.
Minnis reshuffled his Cabinet in early-July 2018 and Wells was appointed minister of transport and local government.
In July 2020, Wells was appointed minister of health following the resignation of Dr. Duane Sands.
He was among the FNM MPs who lost their seats in the 2021 general election.
