Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs Clay Sweeting said local government elections will be held within the next 90 days, with the exact date to be announced shortly.
“We’ve already initiated the process with the Parliamentary Registration Department,” he said following a groundbreaking on Ocean Cay yesterday.
“My ministry is working assiduously to ensure that it’s transparent and as efficient as possible.
“So, within 90 days we’ll have elections. We’ll announce the date shortly. So, I want persons on Family Islands to be aware and be ready.”
Local government elections, which were due in June 2020, were suspended under the state of emergency.
Though the state of emergency ended last week, the COVID-19 Pandemic Special Provisions Act, 2021, extended the suspension for 90 days to permit the “orderly conduct” of the elections.
Sweeting said that his ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure proper safety protocols are in place.
He said the Davis administration is serious about “transforming local government” so that Family Islanders feel more included in governance.
“I’ve visited Andros, Grand Bahama, Eleuthera and I’ll continue my tours to ensure that the local governments understand that we are serious about this,” Sweeting said.
“We are serious about local government and transforming it to ensure that they feel that they are a part of the Nassau central government and to ensure that we do it right.”
