The government administration complex on Bimini was yesterday officially named after George W. Weech, a former MP for Bimini and the Berry Islands.
Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said the building is especially important given the amount of revenue Bimini generates.
“The economy of Bimini is indeed strong,” he said at the naming ceremony.
“It is the third-largest generator of revenue to my government’s purse. It is, therefore, very important that my administration provide the relevant government departments on the island, by having this great complex.
“It is also very timely that we are here today, to name and dedicate such a building that will become a one-stop-shop.
“This undertaking will make it easier for the residents of Bimini to do business.”
The contract for the construction of the complex was awarded in 2016 under the Christie administration, and construction began in 2019.
West Grand Bahama and Bimini MP Obie Wilchcombe said the building is a symbolic show of progress for Bimini residents.
“It is a show that we have made tremendous strides,” he said.
“It is to represent the modernity of this community. It is also to show the greatness of this community.”
Weech said yesterday that he never could have imagined that he would have such a building named after him.
He thanked his former constituents.
“To all of you who have been a part of this journey of mine, thank you,” he said.
