Tennis enthusiasts will get the opportunity to see some competitive doubles competition at the inaugural Byron Ferguson Foundation’s 2021 Doubles Tournament, set to get underway today at the National Tennis Center, Queen Elizabeth Sports Complex.
The tournament runs until Sunday. It will feature an open ladies, open men and open mixed categories.
The foundation is named in memory of Byron Ferguson whose plane, a six-seater Piper Aztec crashed in waters off New Providence on November 8, 2018.
One of the organizers of the tournament is his brother Bjorn Ferguson.
“My family plays tennis,” Bjorn Ferguson said. “Byron grew to love the game of tennis. Him and I would regularly play doubles on his trips home. So I figured a tennis tournament would be a natural way to synchronize the desire to remember Byron with an activity that he loved, and in fact that the family enjoys.”
Registration for the tournament has ended and he expects a competitive three days of tennis action. They chose the doubles format because there are not any doubles-only tournaments.
“We saw it as an opportunity to contribute to the sport and simply address the issue of the lack of doubles tournament. That was what my brother was about – fixing things and finding solutions,” Bjorn Ferguson said.
The foundation is a way for the family to marshal resources and pursuing positive initiatives that they think would have been of interest to Byron (Ferguson), and can have a positive influence or effect in the community. It is their way of ensuring that they are not just moving on without Byron and will always remember and honor him.
The tournament gets underway at noon today. It will get underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Looking to keep the name of Byron Ferguson alive, the Foundation is hoping to have the tournament as an annual event.
