Field set for 2021 Hero World Challenge

Fourteen golfers in the Top-20 Official World Golf latest rankings will be in The Bahamas at the 2021 Hero World Challenge at the Albany Golf Course set for November 29-December 5.

The event which is hosted by Tiger Woods, is back in The Bahamas for a sixth year. The 15-time major winner will not be playing in this year’s tournament as he is still in recovery after he suffered injuries which he got in a life-threatening car accident in late 2020.

Playing in the tournament are three previous winners, winners of 20 major championships and 14 players who competed in the Ryder Cup back in September.

The second-ranked Collin Morikawa will make his debut at the tournament. The American won the 2020 Professional Golf Association (PGA) Championship and the 2020 Open Championship. He is the highest-ranked player in the field.

Looking to defend his title will be Swedish player Henrik Stenson. He won the 2019 edition and held on to the title for an extra year because the 2020 edition was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stenson will look to defend his title when the first round gets underway on December 2. At the 2019 edition of the tournament, he was second after three rounds of play, one stroke behind American Gary Woodland. It was on the back nine at hole number 15, a par-5 hole, that Stenson took the lead, picking up a timely eagle. He was even par the rest of the way to hold on, finishing with a score of -18, 270. Jon Rahm was second with -17, 271. Woods finished fourth with a score of -14, 274.

Over the course of the four rounds, Stenson finished with two eagles and 19 birdies.

Joining Stenson as past champions are Japanese Hideki Matsuyama who is ranked at number 12 and who won the tournament in 2017; and American Jordan Speith who is ranked at number 10 and was victorious in the 2014 edition. Hideki won the 2021 Masters.

Sixth-ranked Bryson DeChambeau is also in the field. The American is the winner of the 2020 U.S Open.

The field also includes Patrick Cantlay (4); 2020 Olympic gold medalist, Xander Schauffele (5), ; Justin Thomas (7); Rory McIlroy (8); Tony Finau (11); Brooks Koepka (13); Abraham Ancer (14); Harris English (15); Daniel Berger (16); Viktor Hovland (17); Tyrrell Hatton (18); and Patrick Reed (19).

Three players received tournament exemption. They include THE PLAYERS Championship winner, Justin Rose; Scottie Scheffler and Webb Simpson.

This is the first TGR Live event outside of The Bahamas. The Hero World Challenge tournament is a driving force for charitable efforts for the TGR Foundation, Tavistock Foundation and the Bahamas Youth Foundation.

As part of ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Dorian in September 2019, the 2019 Hero World Challenge contributed $184,500 to the One Bahamas Fund through a charity challenge to the players – a donation of $500 for each birdie, $1,000 for each eagle and $2,500 for each hole in one. The 18 players in the field made 337 birdies and 16 eagles over the course of the four-day tournament.

Hero MotoCorp which is located in New Delhi, India, is the title sponsor for the tournament.
