Junior tennis nationals set for June 21-24

The dates have been set for the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s (BLTA) Junior National Championships.

The junior tennis nationals are set for June 21-24, 2021, at the BLTA’s National Tennis Center. Coincidentally, national high school examinations are scheduled for the same time period, June 21-25. The BLTA recently released a statement noting that provisions will be made for junior athletes who will be affected by the conflicting schedules.

“The BLTA is aware that national examinations are being held very close to these dates,” the statement read. “So far, it appears that only one player has a conflicting schedule with the national examinations and the current date for the junior tennis nationals based on responses received to-date. We would like to know if any other player will be affected so adjustments can be made, if necessary.”

The dates for the junior tennis nationals are also in the same time period as the 2021 Billy Jean King Cup for the Americas. That event is set for June 23-26, in Panama City, Panama, and representing The Bahamas are player/captain Kerrie Cartwright, collegiate athlete Sydney Clarke, Simone Pratt and Elana Mackey.

The Bahamas is in Group II of the Americas Event A in the 2021 Billy Jean King Cup.

With the junior tennis nationals being held at the same time as the Billy Jean King Cup Americas event, junior player Mackey will be forced to miss the national championships.

A total of seven nations, namely The Bahamas, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Uruguay and host country Panama will compete in two pools at the 2021 Billy Jean King Cup for the Americas.

For the Davis Cup, The Bahamas is in Group III and that event will also be held in Panama City June 30 to July 3.

The Bahamas’ 2021 Davis Cup team is comprised of Justin Roberts, Kevin Major Jr., Baker Newman and player/captain Marvin Rolle. The nations competing include: Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, the US Virgin Islands and host country Panama.

Also, the BLTA recently released the results from the Bahama Pure Water & Ice Junior Tournament that was held over the weekend in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

In Girls’ 12U (12-and-under), Tatyana Madu was the winner while Kaylah Fox was the runner-up. In Boys’ 12U (12-and-under), Denis Marek was the winner while Noah Russell was the runner-up. In the Girls’ 14U (14-and-under) division, Jalisa Clarke prevailed while Felicity McPhee was the runner-up. In the Boys’ 14U (14-and-under) category, William McCartney was the winner while Jerald Carroll was the runner-up. In Girls’ 16U (16-and-under), Jalisa Clarke prevailed again while Genesis Missick was the runner-up. Finally, in Boys’ 16U (16-and-under), Anthony Burrows was the winner while William McCartney was the runner-up.

The BLTA congratulates all the players who participated in the tournament, including all of the first-time participants, and sends out special congratulations to all of the winners and runners-up. The BLTA also congratulates the Grand Bahamas Tennis Association (GBTA) on holding a successful tournament.

The event was the first BLTA sanctioned tournament since the COVID-19 pandemic reached The Bahamas. A number of safety protocols and guidelines were in place.
