Eighty-five police officers are in quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure, according to Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle, but he assured the situation is not handicapping the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
“I can tell you today that we have around 85 police officers in quarantine and that does not significantly affect our ability to respond. We are still able to effectively police,” said Rolle at a ceremony to introduce the new Hubbcat Center to better monitor people placed in quarantine by the Ministry of Health.
“At any given day, we have at least 500 police officers off duty. Everybody doesn’t work the same shift.”
Rolle also told reporters one officer was disciplined after breaching quarantine.
Last week, he told Our News 45 police were in quarantine, noting that the number “fluctuates”.
Rolle noted that police officers are more likely to be exposed to the virus in their day-to-day work than many others.
“This is policing,” he said. “These are first responders. There is always that inherent risk of becoming infected. You can do all [you can] and put in place and still get infected. That’s just the risk. We do everything possible to mitigate and prevent the exposure.”
Rolle could not say how many police officers have been affected by COVID-19.
