One year after seeing his collegiate swim season canceled, junior Luke-Kennedy Thompson is making the most out of this season when he picked up two huge wins for his Howard University Bisons this past Friday night.
They went up against rivals, American University Eagles at Burr Pool, Washington, D.C. The Bisons took advantage of the Eagles with a 137.5-86.5 home victory.
Thompson won the 400-yard individual medley (IM) and the 500-yard freestyle.
There were other Bahamians that swam for the Bisons on the night – Thompson’s younger brother Mark-Anthony Thompson and Erald Thompson III. On the women’s side, his younger sister Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson were also in action. The women were not so fortunate as they lost 144-79 to the Eagles.
Luke-Kennedy got his first win of the night in the 400-yard IM. The 20-year-old clocked 4:15.02 to finish over ten seconds ahead of the rest of the pool. That time put up as the Bison’s third fastest swimmer ever in that event. Erald Thompson was also brilliant as the freshman showed resilience on the final lap to tie with the Eagles’ Griffin Young for second place. They swam an identical 4:24.57. With that time, Thompson swam the eighth fastest time ever for his school in that event.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Luke-Kennedy Thompson was brilliant when the touched the wall first with a time of 4:46.19. It was the fifth-fastest time in school history in that event. Thompson held off the Eagles’ duo of Seamus Brown and Luke Bennett who finished second and third, respectively. Brown swam 4:58 and Bennett swam 5:05.84.
Mark-Anthony Thompson swam in two races – the 1000 yards free and the 200-yard backstroke events. He had a second-place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.17. However, in the 1000-yard free, he swam 10:17.69 to finish third. That time placed him at number four on the Bisons’ all-time list in that event.
Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson swam her way to the ninth-best mark in school history when she clocked 5:25.10 in the 500-yard free. She finished second in that event. The Eagles Mallory Meister clocked 5:18.66 to finish ahead of Thompson.
Albury jumped into the Bison’s top-10 list in the 1000-yard free at the 10th spot. The 18-year-old finished fifth in that event when she clocked 11:42.09.
The Bisons will head on the road for the first time this season when they have a dual against Virginia Military Institute on November 6 in Lexington, Virginia.
Competing in a dual at home at the Morcom Aquatics Center in Tallahassee Florida was Izaak Bastian. The Florida State University Seminoles senior had a light weekend as he swam in one individual event when they took on the Florida Southern College Mocs. Known for swimming in the breast sprints, Bastian was in the pool swimming in the 100-yard free. He finished third with a time of 47.18 seconds.
His next chance to be in the pool will be on Friday, November 5 at home against the University of Florida Gators.
