Home porting in The Bahamas will officially end with Crystal Cruises’ final passenger ingress next weekend, Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) Limited Chief Executive Officer Mike Maura told Guardian Business yesterday, explaining that Royal Caribbean International, which ended its home porting initiative in September, has put Nassau on its list of destinations to carry out home porting in the future should the need arise.
No cruise lines are scheduled to home port in The Bahamas in the near future after next weekend according to NCP’s schedule, Maura said.
He explained that being a home port was an exciting and unique opportunity for the port, which is currently under redevelopment.
According to Maura, Nassau’s cruise port played a pivotal role in the return of cruising in this region.
“It has been a very exciting experience and opportunity for us here at Nassau Cruise Port and the team has done a phenomenal job,” Maura said.
“We got raving reviews from Royal Caribbean in terms of how we performed.
“We were a very essential part of the industry’s rebound beginning back on June 12 with the Adventure of The Seas and really brought a lot of confidence to the cruise traveling public that cruising had returned.
“We did a great job and Royal themselves said that we demonstrated that should they be looking for home port partners in the future, Nassau’s going to be right there at the top of the list.”
Maura said more than 200 ships have visited Nassau since cruise ships once again began calling on the island in June. He revealed that 98 ships are expected this month, while 102 are expected to call in December.
According to Maura, Nassau could be the port receiving the largest number of cruise ships since cruise lines began sailing again.
“If we’re not number one, we are number two but no more than number three in terms of ports that have received the largest number of cruise ships since the return of cruising,” he said.
“Nassau has performed extremely well on the cruise tourism front from a vessel call perspective.”
