Brothers remanded over uncle’s murder

Two brothers accused of fatally stabbing their uncle during a domestic dispute received strong family support at their court appearance yesterday.

Prosecutors allege that an argument between Albert Mortimer, 35, and Albrion Mortimer, 31, and their uncle, George Smith, turned deadly on July 30.

The brothers are accused of attacking their 53-year-old uncle with cutlasses while at their home at Lawton Street in Nassau Village.

Smith died at the scene.

The Mortimers did not have to enter pleas to the murder charge when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

Defence lawyer Keevon Maynard asked the magistrate to remand Albrion Mortimer to Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre (SRC) for a psychiatric evaluation.

However, Ferguson-Pratt said that SRC had a moratorium on new admissions.

Instead, she ordered that doctors perform the evaluation while Mortimer is on remand at the Bahamas Department of Corrections.

The brothers return to court on December 7 to receive a voluntary bill of indictment that will fast-track their case to the Supreme Court for trial.
