Saequan Miller wraps up collegiate water polo career

The first Bahamian collegiate water polo player, Saequan Miller played his final game for the Salem University Tigers on Sunday. He helped them defeat Mercyhurst University Lakers 17-14 to come away with the bronze medal at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Western Region Championship in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Miller was active in his final game when he finished with two goals, three assists and two steals to give it his all in the final game.

“Reality hit me during the second quarter of the game. I spent the first two quarters just being there and trying to process that this is possibly my last game. I know beforehand that I should have done that but it just all hit me while I was in the water. After the second, after half time, I would have looked into the stands before the game would have resumed and I saw my group of supporters and group of friends. It all just empowered me to be present to give what I can while I can. I did just that I am very happy with my performance. I left it all in the water. There’s nothing more to it that I would add,” Miller said.

He would have preferred to be playing in the finals instead of the third-place game. However, he knows that it has been a rough season for his team. They finished with a 13-13 win/loss record and a two-game winning streak.

“Finishing third definitely wasn’t where we wanted to be, but I am happy and proud of my teammates, more so on a mental level for pulling themselves through. Our previous season where we were heavily impacted with COVID-19 dawning of quarantines, the lack of games, the lack of practice and led us to a stagnant mode. For us to pull ourselves through and being top-three speaks volume,” Miller said.

They lost to Gannon University 18-11 the day before. It was a tough game for them and they were devastated and Miller said they had to regroup to pull off the victory over the Lakers for the fourth straight time this season.

He felt the season was rushed but was happy to have a season. It was an injury-free season for the senior. His toughest challenge was time management having to juggle school, water polo and work.

“I took on a job to assist with my living because I had moved off campus and started a life here. Time management was the biggest thing for me. Time management with practice, balancing school, my job, life and then my social life. It was just a lot but I’m proud of myself for getting through it,” Miller said.

He will miss his teammates whether it be the classroom sessions or in the pool. Miller finishes with a bachelor’s degree in business and economics and will be looking to do a master’s degree but not sure in what area.
