The first Byron Ferguson Memorial Doubles Tournament wrapped up on Sunday, November 7 at the National Tennis Center as three divisional champions were crowned.
One of the organizers of the tournament, Bjorn Ferguson, said that although the rain threatened the tournament, it held up enough for them to complete it.
“We had some high-level doubles being played with some of the best tennis players in the country. We will continue to build upon this and making this the premier doubles event in the country,” Ferguson said.
In the men’s open championship, reigning men’s national tennis champion, Kevin Major Jr. and his partner Dr. Wayne Thompson held off Bjorn Ferguson and Phillip Major Jr 8-5 to claim the men’s doubles title.
On the ladies open side, junior tennis players had a competitive final when Sierra Rodgers teamed up with Maddison Bowleg to play against cousins Sapphire Ferguson and BreAnn Ferguson.
The two cousins won the first set 6-3 but Rodgers and Bowleg came back and won the second set 6-2. In the tie-breaker, Rodgers and Bowleg were too much as they won 10-6.
Antonia Meade and Phillip Major Jr. were victorious in the mixed doubles. They took down Rita Roy and Scott Reddick 8-3.
Bjorn Ferguson was grateful for the support from persons who played or came out to watch.
“I saw the coming together of people from all walks of life who had the wonderful opportunity to meet and rub shoulders with my brother,” Ferguson said. “You had people from beyond the sport of tennis tournament passing through, simply to show their faces and lend their support.
“Seeing that level of support was a very welcoming and heartwarming experience. It really demonstrated in a material way how many people crossed paths with Byron at some point and the imprint and impression that he left on them. He was truly a loving and kind person.”
The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Mario Bowleg was also on hand. He coached Byron and Bjorn at the junior level in basketball with the Vita Malt Giants. He also coached the youngest brother, Anvon Ferguson while he was on the Bahamas national junior boys basketball team.
Bjorn Ferguson said they are looking to stage the second annual tournament year in early next year November. It coincides with the day when Byron Ferguson’s plane crash occurred, November 8 2018.
He thanked the sponsor, Commonwealth Brewery for partnering with and supporting the tournament.
