Bahamian guard Chavano ‘Buddy’ Hield dropped 14 points in the first half in his Sacrament Kings 109-104 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Monday night. He was not so fortunate in the second half as he went scoreless at home at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
He was set to go against his fellow Bahamian DeAndre Ayton but Ayton was out with a lower right leg contusion. He has not played since Thursday November 4.
Also in action on Monday night, was Bahamian Kai Jones and his Hornets. Jones did not play because of coach’s decision. His Hornets lost 126-123 to the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
Hield slid into the starting five after Tyrese Haliburton was inactive for the game due to an injury. Hield finish the game 5-for-16 from the field including 3-for-11 from deep. He finished with six rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Atyon’s Sun was able to get revenge on the Kings who took them down 110-107 in late October in Phoenix, Arizona. The win on Monday night propelled the Suns to its fifth straight victory. The Suns have a 6-3 win/loss record on the season and the Kings are 5-6.
The game saw a late coach’s challenge at the 1:12 mark in the fourth quarter by Suns’ coach Monty Williams. The Suns was up 107-102 on the play in question, the Kings’ Harrison Barnes drove to the rim and the Suns guard Devin Booker was whistled for the foul. The Kings had a chance to come within two points of the Suns as Barnes made the contact layup and was headed to the free-throw line before Williams used his challenge.
Williams’ challenge was successful as Barnes was charged with an offensive foul. The score remained 107-102 as the Suns gained control of the ball.
Barnes cut the lead to three points with 9.7 seconds left in the game. The Suns led 107-104. The Suns took the lead to 109-104 with 4.6 seconds left in the game. Hield attempted a three coming out of the Kings timeout but it missed as time expired and the Suns survived a Kings 28-11 fourth quarter advantage.
Barnes led the Kings with a game-high 26 points. Cameron Payne led the Suns with 24 points.
Hield’s first bucket was a three-point shot at the 8:41 mark in the first quarter as the Suns led 12-7. At the end of the first quarter Hield was cooking with eight points. It was a tough second half for Hield as he went 0-for-6 from the field and 0-for-5 from deep.
The Kings return to action tonight against the San Antonio Spurs tonight at 8.30. That game is set to be at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Ayton will be out again tonight when his Suns welcome the Portland Trailblazers to the Footprint Center, Phoenix, Arizona. The game gets underway at 9’ o clock.
Jones will and the Hornets also return to action tonight when they head on the road to play the Memphis Grizzlies at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee.
