Father: I only want justice

The father of four-year-old D’Onya “Bella” Walker, who was brutally murdered on Friday, said yesterday he wants justice for his daughter.

Dino Smith spoke to reporters outside the Magistrate’s Court Complex shortly after Ostonya Walker, Bella’s mother, was charged with exposing a child to grievous harm and cruelty to children in connection with Bella’s death, and her boyfriend, Darion Smith, 33, was charged with murder and cruelty to children.

Smith, who didn’t watch the court proceedings, said he was sad.

“I don’t know what to say right now to be real with you,” he said. “I only want justice.

“… I just want to carry her home. I only want to bury her, you know?

Smith said he was waiting on authorities to release his daughter’s remains so that she can be laid to rest.

“I am gonna carry her back to Freeport and bury her,” he continued. “That’s where she was happy.”

Bella died on Friday as a result of “blunt force trauma to the body”.

Minister of National Security Wayne Munroe said Bella’s autopsy revealed that the trauma was sufficient to break ribs and puncture internal organs.

As a result, he said Bella suffered massive internal bleeding.

Munroe added that there was also some indication of previous injuries.

In court yesterday, Smith and Walker were not required to enter pleas to the charges when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

They were denied bail.
