The Minor League Baseball (MiLB) 2021 regular season is winding down and several Bahamian professional baseball players were in action for their respective teams over the weekend.
In Triple-A action, Lucius Fox and the Omaha Storm Chasers lost their series to the Toledo Mud Hens. The two teams are in a battle for the top spot in the Triple-A East Midwest Division. Fox’s team is a half game behind the Mud Hens with a 61-47 win/loss record on the season. The Mud Hens sport a 61-46 record. Fox and the Storm Chasers are fifth in the league overall.
Fox was able to come away with his first home-run this season on Thursday night. They lost 5-3 in that game. The Kansas City Royals prospect finished the night 1-for-5 at the plate with that solo home-run. In the last game on Sunday, he came away with two hits in five at-bats. Fox finished with two RBIs and one run scored in that game. The Storm Chasers lost 11-10 after they tried to make a comeback. They gave up nine runs in the first four innings which hurt them in the long run.
Fox is averaging .192 for the Storm Chasers and has 28 hits for them. He also has 14 RBIs (runs batted in) and 14 stolen bases.
The Storm Chasers were in action last night, getting their series against the St. Paul Saints underway at the CHS Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, but no score was available up to press time.
D’Shawn Knowles put on a batting clinic on Saturday night for his team, the Inland Empire 66ers, as they won 7-5 over the Modesto Nuts. The shortstop went 4-for-5 including a home-run that put his team up 7-3 in the top of the ninth inning. He finished with one run scored and a whopping five RBIs. His batting average jumped from .216 to .225. On Sunday, he finished 1-for-5, dropping the average down to .224.
The 66ers tied that six-game series, winning the third, fourth and fifth games.
In the five games he played in September, Knowles went 12-for-23 to lift his batting average to .304. He has 79 hits on the season and has scored 58 runs. The Los Angeles Angels’ prospect hit the ball out the park five times and has 48 RBIs. His speed and base-running ability were on display this season as he has 28 stolen bases.
The 66ers play in the Low-A West league in the South Division. They sport a 53-52 record on the season and sit four and a half games behind the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes who have a 59-49 record.
Next up for the 66ers will be a tough home series against the Quakes. They played their first game last night at the San Manuel Stadium in San Bernadino, California, but no score was available up to press time.
It has been a tough three games for Grand Bahamian Warren Saunders in his latest action. He started off the month without a hit in nine at-bats for the St. Lucie Mets. His last game before that drought was last week Tuesday in the series against the Jupiter Hammerheads. The New York Mets prospect finished 2-for-4 to score one run in that game. His batting average for the season is .257.
Saunders and his team sport a 57-49 record on the season and sit in the fourth position in the Low-A Southeast league and are second behind the Hammerheads (57-49) in the East division.
The Mets will host the Lakeland Flying Tigers in their next series. The first game was played last night at Clover Park, in Port St. Lucie, Florida, but no score was available up to press time.
