Roy ties for fourth at Scripps  

Bahamas national spelling champion Roy Seligman’s amazing and historic run at the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee came to a close last night after he incorrectly spelled the word ambystoma in round 12 of the live televised finals.

Roy, 12, completed the 2021 spelling championship tied for fourth place with three other spellers who were eliminated in the round.

After Roy had spelled the word, judges at the competition had to review an audio recording of his spelling to officially determine whether Roy spelled the word with an “i” instead of a “y”.

At first, the judges had told Roy he was correct before opting to review the audio of his spelling. But after the review they determined that Roy misspelled the word by using an “i”.

The Spelling Bee shared on Twitter afterwards Roy represented The Bahamas wonderfully last night and throughout the competition.

Three spellers moved on to continue the battle for the Scripps Cup, which was eventually won by Zaila Avant-garde. She was the first African-American to win the title.

Roy had correctly spelled prophylactic to open his championship stage showing.

He was one of six spellers advancing out of the competition’s opening round. Five spellers were eliminated.

The pre-teen correctly answered that an expert in matters batrachian knows all about frogs and toads to remain alive in round 11.

A field of 209 started the process to the finals.

Roy was among 11 contestants vying for the Scripps National Spelling Bee title on Thursday night at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World. He was the lone international contestant.

Roy was also the first Bahamian to advance to the finals of the prestigious competition since The Bahamas began competing at Scripps in 1998.

United States First Lady Jill Biden attended the finals, which returned after being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was the first time the spelling bee had been canceled since 1945.
