Knowles hits grand slam in win; other minor leaguers in action

It was a huge night for Bahamian center fielder D’Shawn Knowles as he connected for a grand slam to help his team, the Inland Empire 66ers, defeated the Visalia Rawhide 11-5 in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) action at the San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino, California, on Wednesday night.

On the fifth pitch in his at-bat in the bottom of the eighth inning, Knowles was called out by the plate umpire, swinging through a third strike. He appealed the decision on the grounds that he tipped the ball and it was a foul ball. The base umpire and the plate umpire met and the call was overturned and the count was one ball and two strikes.

The next pitch came well within the strike zone and the Los Angeles Angels’ prospect sent it to right field for the grand slam – his third home run of the season. That grand slam was the final nail in the coffin for the Rawhide.

Knowles, who led off for the 66ers, finished the game 1-for-5 with that grand slam home run and scored two runs. He now has a .232 batting average.

They returned to action last night but no score was available up to press time.

In addition to batting .232, Knowles has 21 RBIs (runs batted in), 26 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in Low-A West action.

The 66ers sport a 27-28 win/loss record on the season and sit in second in the South Division of the Low-A West league.

St. Lucie Mets’ designated hitter Warren Saunders was able to pick up a hit on Wednesday night as his team scored a 6-2 win over the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Saunders’ only hit that was a single that came in the bottom of the fourth inning when he hit a line drive to center field. He was able to score his only run of the game when Joe Suozzi homered to the right field, bringing him home. His team was up 5-0 at that point.

The New York Mets prospect’s single was his 50th hit of the season. He has 25 RBIs, 30 runs scored and two home runs, and a batting average of .284.

The Mets sport a 30-26 record to sit in first in the Low-A Southeast East Division. The series continued last night but no score was available at press time.

Keithron Moss and his team, the Down East Wood Ducks, fell to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, 10-3, on Wednesday night at the SEGRA Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Moss, who homered on Tuesday night, was unable to pick up a hit in four at-bats. He was able to get a walk, and scored a run.

The 19-year-old is having a tough time at the plate this season. He has a .165 batting average. Moss has 19 hits in 115 at-bats this season. He has scored 19 runs and has four home runs and 10 RBIs.

The Ducks sport a 31-24 record to sit in second in the Low-A East Central Division.

The Texas Rangers prospect was set to be in action again last night but bad weather postponed the game against the Woodpeckers to today.
