Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said the government will begin its vaccine rollout next week, following a trial run this weekend.
A batch of 20,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in The Bahamas today.
“Today is the most delightful, joyous day of my life,” Minnis said at the Lynden Pindling International Airport shortly after the plane carrying the vaccines touched down.
“Now we can truly see light at the end of the tunnel where we can overcome this pandemic and get back to normal life, which I know you have all been waiting for.”
The prime minister added that more details regarding the rollout will be announced in the coming days.
“We have completed the IT (information technology) program to ensure the registration of individuals so the entire system can be transparent,” he said.
Asked to respond to the heads of the three major healthcare unions who said they were not consulted on the vaccine rollout, Minnis said he is more concerned about getting the vaccine out to the public “so that we can get back to normalcy as quickly as possible.”
On Sunday, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said healthcare workers will be among the first group of people to receive the vaccine.
The vaccines were donated by the government of India.
