Bahamian collegiate players help their teams win

It was a good weekend for Bahamian collegiate tennis players as their respective schools picked up wins in their various events.

In National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I action, Sydney Clarke and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers (7-5) are winners of five straight as they picked up wins over Lipscomb University (3-4) on Saturday and the Tulane University Green Waves (8-4) on Sunday. Both events were played on their home courts at the George Ward Park in Birmingham, Alabama.

Against the Green Waves, the Blazers got a close 4-3 victory.

Clarke won her singles match against Kristen Borland on court four. The Bahamian got an easy 6-2 first set victory. It was a tougher second set for Clarke but she was able to win 6-4 to close out the match in straight sets.

On the doubles side, Clarke and partner Jana Hecking fell to Adelaide Lavery and Borland, 6-2. However, the Blazers were still able to claim the doubles point.

On Saturday, the Blazers took down the Bisons, 4-2. Clarke and Hecking had a better performance as they took down Anja Trbeznik and Emma Zakordoniec, 6-4.

Clarke and the Blazers return to action on Thursday at noon, taking on the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks.

In NCAA Division II action, Sierra Donaldson and the Lee University Flames (4-2) won at home, taking down Lincoln Memorial University (2-4) at the DeVos Tennis Center, in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Donaldson won her singles match in two straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3, over Mae Fitzgerald.

In doubles play, Donaldson and her partner Carley Sickinger won 6-3 to help the Flames win the doubles point.

The Flames’ next game will be against the Valdosta State University Blazers at home on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

After suffering their first loss of the season on Friday, February 26, Abigail Simms and the Indiana Tech Warriors (7-1) got back in the win column with home wins on Friday and Sunday in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). They played the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers (1-4) on Friday, and the University of Findlay Oilers (3-1) on Sunday. Both events were played at the Wildwood Racquet Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

They took down the Oilers in a tightly contested matchup, 4-3.

The sophomore and her partner Isidora Hrnjak were able to come up with a 6-1 victory in number one doubles play. They played against Laiying Alvarado and Samantha Sweet.

In singles, Simms fell in two sets to Luciana Pereyra. She lost the first set 6-4 and in the second set, she put up a fight but Pereyra ended up winning 7-6. She lost the match, 6-4 and 7-6(10-3).

Simms only played in doubles action on Fridays, when they took down the Tigers, 6-1. Simms and Hrnjak won 6-4 over Narjis Mzibri and Heidi Moyo to help the Warriors get the doubles point.

The Warriors was able to get all but one victory in the singles matches.

Simms was set to be in action yesterday against the Holy Cross College Saints but that event was postponed to a later date. The Warriors will play their next event on Monday, March 15, at home, taking on the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars.
