It’s been over a year since Bahamian heavyweight boxer Amron “Sandman” Sands has stepped into the ring for a fight but that drought will end tonight when he takes on the Dominican Republic’s Alexis Garcia in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Hotel Catalonia Malecon Center will be the venue.
Both fighters put their undefeated record on the line for this fight. Sands sport a perfect 11-0 win/loss record while his opponent has a 9-0 record. This is the Bahamian’s second fight in the Dominican Republic and second straight one there. Last time out, he won by an eight-round unanimous decision over Christian Galvez.
Yesterday at the weigh-in, Sands tipped in at 258 pounds on the scale. He said he is ready to get in the ring and knock Garcia out by the third round.
“It will be an interesting fight,” Sands said. “I feel comfortable now because I was training during the pandemic. I believe that my first round, there will be a little ring rust but after the first round, I should be back to normal. I give the fight until about the third round and I’ll knock him out – that is what I predict.”
Sands added that there were no words exchanged at the weigh-in and that Garcia had his head down most of the time. Sands said that showed him that he is not ready to fight.
While in training camp, Sands said he knows Garcia switches his fight style.
“He switches it up. Sometimes he fights southpaw and orthodox. That is the only difficult thing I could say that we saw. For my training camp, I ended up bringing in the two different styles,” Sands said.
Sands’ coaches are Richard Mayos and Joey Ramos. He fights under the Dibella Entertainment banner.
“Everyone who knows me, know that I am not a pushover fighter. If he comes to fight, I definitely can come to fight as well. Tune in to see a good fight. I know what I am bringing and I hope he is prepared because I am trying to take his head off. There is no mercy on this side,” Sands said.
If he picks up this win tonight, Sands said he will look to make his “showtime” debut in New York City, New York. This fight will be his comeback fight and he is looking to move up the rankings.
Training in Orlando, Florida, during the pandemic was good for him, he said, because he was able to do some individual workouts.
“It was good,” Sands said. “I liked it because it was private because it was just me and my other friend who is a professional too. We got a lot more done because it was just the two of us, so my coach did not have to worry.”
This fight will be live streamed by Shuan Boxing Promotions via their YouTube channel and it will be on the DiBella website, www.deb1.com.
