Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. – Matthew 2:7
As we are about to enter into this third Sunday in Advent, the words of our text resonate within the hearts of the faithful today, as it did in the days in which it was spoken. ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ is as relevant a question of doomful curiosity today as it was then, for only the wise are able to reveal the source from which greatness will abound.
Some years ago, I was asked by a poor but humble mother, to see what I could do to help her son get back on the government’s lunch program. I gladly accepted as I knew the circumstances of this family. There was more than a dozen of them living in a one-room cramped house and it was almost heartless to throw the young man off the program. The guidance counselor said that the order came from higher up, but she directed me to go and see someone elsewhere, which I did. Long story short, he was put back on the program and as I write, glory to God, he is a recent university graduate with a Bachelor’s degree.
How many success stories are there coming from those who, by the grace of God, were able to see goodness and potential in those who were maligned and cast to the heap of “you won’t amount to anything”?
As Matthew records the birth of Jesus and the visit of the Wise Men to King Herod to enquire the whereabout of the birth of Jesus, the king of the Jews, Herod was greatly troubled and all Jerusalem with him. So, he gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together and demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him – in Bethlehem of Judaea for thus it is written by the prophet, and thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a governor that shall rule my people Israel.
The year 2020, globally, will be forever remembered in the hearts and minds of people as the year of years in their lifetime – the sorrow, sadness, tribulation, distress, uncertainty of length of days, loss of limb, lives, possessions and positions. But 2021 is on the horizon, yes 21, the combination of the three sevens and glory be to God, the just shall live by faith, and those who have domiciled to the “little towns of Bethlehem” are going to rejoice, for the rejected stones will become the chief cornerstones of buildings, which were purposefully not designed for them.
It is very sad when in a land where a man’s gift should make room for him, there are only the selected few who over and over, are given high paying positions. When one is finished, they receive another, so that their financial baskets are always full. The favoritism to friends and family run deep on both sides of the fence.
But the Word of God is assuring and comforting those who mourn because they have been denied privileges, that the time is nigh when those from the Bethlehem of our times will rise and shine and become the righteous rulers and a great shout of joy and gladness will sound forth from the people oppressed. Indeed, the future leaders are among you.
No, we must not enter into lockdowns to host pity parties, sigh, cry, weep and mourn, for we join in with the Virgin Mary as she recites her song of thanksgiving, praise and adoration. The poor will be exalted and the mighty will be put down from positions that they used to despise, look down and trample the poor.
