Police shoot man following high-speed chase

Police shot a man following a high-speed chase on Thursday night that started near Gladstone Road and ended with the shooter crashing his car off Solider Road.

It all started when officers with the COVID-19 Enforcement Unit were on patrol near Gladstone Road and Carmichael Road shortly before 9 p.m. The officers said they witnessed the occupants of two cars engaged in a shootout.

Police said the driver of the black car then started shooting at the COVID unit and fled. The officers alerted police control room and pursued the shooter. The driver of the black car evaded the COVID unit but was picked up a short time later on St. Vincent Road by another police unit and the chase began anew.

Police said, while on Baillou Hill Road, the shooter began firing at officers, hitting the patrol unit. He then turned east onto Soldier Road, police said. Eventually, the driver hit a utility pole at the intersection of Ole Trail Road and Solider Road, police said.

The driver got out of the car and aimed his gun in the direction of the officers, police said.

The officers then shot him.

A black Austria Glock .40 pistol with five unfired rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene. The victim was transported to hospital where he was last listed in stable condition.

Video of the incident was widely circulated online and residents of the surrounding Soldier Road community reportedly heard the barrage of gunfire.
