Bahamian professional basketball player Travis Munnings had an easy outing in his last game as he finished with eight points and eight rebounds in a massive 102-54 home win for his team, União Desportiva Oliveirense, over Futbol Clube Barreirense, at the Dr. Salvador Machado Pavilhao in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal. Also in Europe, Lashann Higgs dropped a team-high 27 points in an 81-64 loss for her team, Embutidos Bembibre PDM, to Perfumerias Avenida Salamanca, on Tuesday night. That game was played on Embutidos Bembibre PDM’s home court, at Bembibre Arena, in Bembibre, Spain. Higgs had a 32-point outing in her previous game.
As for Munnings and his team, they came off their first loss of the season, falling to Vitoria SC, and are looking to start another winning streak. They sit in fourth place in the standings in the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol, the highest men’s basketball league in Portugal, with a 6-1 win/loss record.
The forward went 2-for-3 from the field and was perfect from the charity stripe as he went 4-for-4 from there. He was also able to dish out six assists in 23 minutes of play.
Munnings and his squad forced 16 turnovers in a defensive game. By the end of the first half, the game was pretty much already decided as Munnings and his team were ahead 58-27. They cruised the rest of the way, outscoring their opponents 44-27 in the second half.
Justin Alston led the way for the home team with 32 points and eight rebounds. Dakota Quinn was the top performer for the visitors with 11 points and six rebounds.
Next up for Munnings and his team will be a key matchup on the road against the undefeated league leaders, FC Porto (6-0), tomorrow night at the Pavilhao Dragao Arena in Porto, Portugal, at 8:30 p.m. local time, five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST) in The Bahamas.
Higgs was on fire on Tuesday night as she finished the game shooting 9-for-12 from the field for a 75 percent clip. The guard was able to connect on three of her six attempts from deep. On the glass, the Bahamian managed to pull down six rebounds in 27 minutes of play. She also finished with two assists and two steals.
With that loss, Bembibre fell to 2-11 on the season and sit in 15th in the Liga Dia League, the top women’s league in Spain.
It was a close game for the home team in the first quarter as they resumed playing in front of their fans. They were down 25-20 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter did not go the way Higgs and her squad had hoped as the visitors outscored them 24-9 in that quarter to head into the half up 49-29.
The second half belonged to Bembibre as they went on to outscore Avenida 35-32. That was not enough to overcome the hole they dug for themselves.
Katie Samuelson was the top performer for Avenida with 16 points and four rebounds.
Bembibre returns to action on Saturday night in a road game against Tuenti Movil Estudiantes Madrid. That game will be played at the Magarino Sports Center in Madrid, Spain. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. local time, six hours ahead of EST in The Bahamas.
