Man says murdered son kept to himself

The morning after his son was murdered in Nassau Village, Vincent Knowles, Sr., 57, said he is trying to stay strong for his daughters.

“He was the only son I had in this world,” he said yesterday.

“He left me with my girls.  Now I have to be stronger for them. I have to be. I have to be. They’re all I left with now.”

Vincent Knowles Jr., 26, was gunned down late Tuesday night on the corner of Forbes Street and Lawson Avenue, police said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Audley Peters said Knowles was pronounced dead on the scene. Peters said there was no evidence to indicate that the murder was gang-related or related to other recent incidents.

Knowles Sr. said yesterday that his son was a quiet soul who did what he could to help others and get by.

“Vincent was a quiet person, stayed to himself,” he said.

“He had some neighbors on the side of him, he cleaned their yard, my brother yard.

“…That’s the type of person he was.”

Knowles said this isn’t the first time he has lost a child, noting that one of his daughters died of meningitis. He said the pain is unlike anything else.

“I was working yesterday on a lady’s car,” he said.

“All yesterday there was this feeling inside my gut something was going wrong. I tell my fiancĂ© I feel something was going wrong until last night when my daughter run inside my house, ‘Daddy, daddy, they just killed Vincent.’

“I had to sit down on the bed and pause for a while because my heart started to flutter. It ain’t no feeling like when you lost a child. I already lost a child. Now this my second child going like that.”

Knowles said the last time he saw his son alive was Tuesday morning.

“That was the last time I seen my child, Vincent, with breath in his body,” he said.

He added, “It’s rough.

“…But I always learned this: only the strong in this world going to survive. So, I would advise everyone who is going through this now to turn to Christ. Turn to Christ.”
