Chisholm, Marlins drop game two to the Braves

Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm and the Miami Marlins dropped another game to the Atlanta Braves yesterday, falling behind two games to none in their best-of-five National League Division Series (NLDS). They now find themselves on the ropes, one game away from elimination, after not dropping a series in playoff history.

Once again, the Bahamian infielder didn’t get into the game, watching from the dugout as the Braves won a pitcher’s duel to put themselves one win away from advancing to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) for the first time in 19 seasons. They won 2-0, surrendering just three hits. Ian Anderson got the win for the Braves while Pablo López was strong in defeat, surrendering just a pair of solo home runs. Game three is set for this afternoon at 2:08 p.m. at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, as all of the division series games are being held in COVID-19 pandemic “bubbles”.

Rookie right hander Sixto Sánchez will get the start for the Marlins today.

The Marlins have a perfect 7-0 win-loss record in postseason series in their history, winning World Series titles in 1997 and 2003, but now that unblemished mark is in jeopardy as they find themselves on the brink of elimination.

Chisholm has not played in any of the Marlins’ four games this postseason after being a key part of their defense in the second half of the season. With the middle of the Marlins’ infield defense intact with Miguel Rojas at shortstop and Jon Berti as the regular second baseman, Chisholm’s playing time has been limited.

During the regular season, he made an appearance in 24 games for the Marlins, starting 11 games at second base and six at shortstop.

Chisholm struggled at the plate, going hitless in 19 straight at-bats at one point, and finishing the season batting .161 with two home runs and six RBIs. In the season finale against the New York Yankees, he was 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a solo home run.

Defensively, Chisholm was a gem. The 22-year-old Bahamian had 25 putouts, 43 assists and just one error in 69 opportunities. He was a part of 13 double plays and had a fielding percentage of 1.000 at second base and .962 at shortstop.

Chisholm helped lead the Marlins to a 31-29 win-loss record – their first winning season since 2009. Last year, they finished a National League worst 57-105 and became the first NL team, and second in all of baseball, to make the playoffs after a 100-loss season. Seeded sixth, the Marlins swept the third-seeded Chicago Cubs in the wild card round of the playoffs, becoming the first team to win a postseason series after having a 100-loss season. The Braves are seeded second.

The Marlins could be down to their final game of the season today and the Bahamian infielder is still looking for his first opportunity at postseason baseball in the majors.
