One new case of COVID-19

One more case of COVID-19 was confirmed on New Providence over the weekend, bringing the total number of cases in The Bahamas to 103.

According to the Minsitry of Health, the latest case is a 52-year-old woman of New Providence, with no history of travel. She is in isolation at home.

There have been 81 confirmed cases on New Providence, 13 confirmed cases on Bimini, eight confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Grand Bahama and one confirmed case on Cat Cay.

In the past few weeks, there has been a notable reduction in the number of new COVID-19 cases in the country.

The latest case was the only new confirmed case in the past week.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Delon Brennen said last week that while there continues to be some new cases, there has been a significant reduction in community spread of COVID-19 in the country.

“What we’re seeing is a lot of our new cases are related to our old cases,” he said.

“They are known contacts.”

“…That’s where we are finding most of our cases nowadays. And that’s actually a really good thing. It means that we don’t necessarily have the level of community transmission that was going on previously, where we were getting all of these spontaneous cases.”

The Bahamas has been in a state of emergency over COVID-19 since mid-March, with emergency orders being enacted.

Under these orders, nationwide curfews and lockdowns were implemented along with other social restrictions intended to curb the spread of the virus.

Those restrictions have slowly begun to be relaxed as the government moves forward with a five-phase reopening plan, with the country beginning to move into phase four this week.
