Repatriation flights to The Bahamas have been suspended after it was revealed that one of the people on the repatriation flight to Grand Bahama on Friday was infected with COVID-19, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced on Sunday.
“We are investigating to see how the individual was allowed to board that flight,” he said during a national address.
The prime minister said three people traveled with the infected passenger.
“All four of the individuals have been tested and we are awaiting the results,” he said.
Minnis added that all of the passengers wore PPEs, which decreased the risk of exposure to others.
He said of the passengers of the flight, 51 disembarked on Grand Bahama and the others disembarked on New Providence.
The government brought 183 Bahamians and residents who returned to Grand Bahama and New Providence.
Those individuals, who had been trapped abroad since the Bahamian border closed in March, were required to test negative for COVID-19 before boarding a Bahamasair flight back to The Bahamas.
The prime minister said he has advised the airline and was also advised by the health officials to temporarily suspend repatriation flights. He said flights will be resumed once health officials make that determination.
