Minister of Tourism and Aviation Dionisio D’Aguilar said he will not resign over his involvement in an incident where six permanent residents were allowed to enter The Bahamas and isolate at home while the borders remained closed to Bahamian citizens.
The residents had donated 2,500 testing swabs.
Former Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands resigned in light of the incident, taking responsibility for approving what he said was a last-minute request by the donors to remain in the country.
However, D’Aguilar also assisted in organizing the flight.
Asked outside Cabinet yesterday if he thinks he should have resigned along with Sands, D’Aguilar said: “No.”
D’Aguilar said he believes he did nothing wrong.
“I think honestly that enough has been said about this,” he said.
“I think it’s been ventilated. The prime minister has spoken to it. Dr. Sands has spoken to it. I don’t think I did anything wrong and I’ve moved on. I think we should all do the same.”
The decision to allow the permanent residents in was revealed by The Nassau Guardian nearly two weeks ago as hundreds of Bahamians who were stuck abroad were told they would have to quarantine at a government facility upon arrival in The Bahamas and would have to show COVID-19-negative test results before being allowed entry.
