It has been a busy week for grocery stores across The Bahamas as residents were out in droves to get groceries before a five-day full lockdown intended to slow the spread of COVID-19.
At Super Value Golden Gates yesterday, there was no line to enter. However, employees were visibly tired and were looking forward to the four days of rest.
“We will get some needed rest to spend time with the family,” said Assistant Manager Krisheba Hilaire. “It is Holy Week so after today, we will be closing. A small group of the staff will come on Saturday to get the store back up to normal and then they will get Sunday and Monday off.”
One of the cashiers, Tanisha Major, said she came into work on Tuesday and was surprised to see the crowd she met.
Many people waited in line for hours, some of them having arrived after 5 a.m. outside various grocery stores.
Major is happy for the break and plans to catch up on sleep.
“These days off are going to be great; I cannot wait,” she said. “It was a tiresome week with long hours. It was very hectic. I am extremely tired, and I plan to sleep. I cannot wait to be away from the public.”
Another cashier, Kira Cephas, who worked during Hurricane Dorian last year, said the COVID-19 traffic was more chaotic.
“For the break, I am going to enjoy it. It was a challenging week for me with the long hours. I plan to rest my back, shoulders, arms and migraine,” Cephas said.
Hilaire reiterated that the store has enough groceries.
The complete lockdown ends Tuesday at 5 a.m.
The Bahamas has recorded 41 confirmed cases of COVID-19 – 34 on New Providence, six on Grand Bahama and one on Bimini. Five people have recovered and there have been eight COVID-19 related deaths.
