Fernander wants faster testing for COVID-19 at border

President of the Christian Council Bishop Delton Fernander.

Bahamas Christian Council (BCC) President Bishop Delton Fernander yesterday called for faster testing of COVID-19 in The Bahamas.

“We had a conversation earlier about what is being done to test and I think some of our partners around the world can provide us with more faster testing,” Fernander said.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from in the world. I think the faster testing tool should be used in The Bahamas. In other words, some countries you still come in but you get tested at the border.

“Most of our tourists come through the airport and off of cruise ships. We should have the ones [tests] that [are] used in China and they should give us fast testing.”

He added, “If you come off a ship, if you come off a plane, if you’re found to have the virus, you’re stopped [and] you’re quarantined.”

As of yesterday, there were over 111,000 cases of COVID-19 across the globe. Over 3,800 people have died with the majority of deaths in mainland China where the virus originated late last year.

In the U.S., there were at least 545 confirmed cases and 22 deaths.

Fernander said the BCC will host a meeting with Health Minister Dr. Duane Sands and a majority of pastors in The Bahamas at the Melia Resort on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

“[Sands] will bring his team out,” he said.

“He will answer our questions. We will have pamphlets.”

Fernander continued, “And when we leave that meeting, I will be able to speak definitely because I would’ve spoken to the council and I would’ve gotten the updat[e].”
