Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) is completing the final stages of acquiring the land needed to build the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant that will fuel the company’s newest engines, BPL Chairman Dr. Donovan Moxey said, following the official commissioning of a new engine Thursday.
Last year, BPL was in the midst of negotiating the acquisition of plots of land near its Clifton Pier Power Station for the LNG plant, but was having difficulty in the process.
Moxey said the company is well on its way to completing the acquisition, though he would not say where the land near the Clifton power station is.
“I’m not at liberty to say exactly where its location is,” Moxey said.
“When we look at being able to supply gas to the power plan, you want to have something in proximity to where it is you’re building the power plant. That’s well in progress.”
Shell North America is expected to build and operate the LNG plant, which Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said will “usher in a new energy future for The Bahamas”.
“Once BPL and Shell have completed their negotiations, Shell has committed to constructing an LNG regasification facility at a location near the Clifton Pier Power Station,” Minnis said.
“This revolutionary step means that after more than a decade of talk, LNG will become commercially available in The Bahamas.
“This means that BPL will be able to switch all of its newest generation assets to LNG.”
Moxey said in January that the definitive deal between Shell and BPL should be completed by this month.
